Organizing 101

I am always in awe but also completely overwhelmed at many of the organizing things I see around — on the internet, in magazines and on tv.   Don’t get me wrong — they are certainly organized and beautifully so, but to me, it seems like a lot of expense and a lot of work for things that are not going to stay that way (unless nobody lives there).  The reality is, with a family and busy lives, we need inexpensive, simple yet functional.

Things don’t have to be complicated.  The KISS (Keep It Simple Silly) works best!  There is really no right or wrong way as it’s all about what works for you.  After all, you’re the one who has to live with it.

I have found, no matter what  you are tackling — go to the end and think backwards.  For example,

  •  If I need this document down the road, where would be the first place I’d look?  Then put the document there.
  • I don’t use this pot much, but if I did need it — where would be the first place I’d look?  Put the pot there
  • If I need to know Uncle Pete’s birthday, where would be the first place I’d go to look it up?  Write it down there.

You get the picture.

Start with small things at first.  Break things off in smaller chunks and tackle them as you go.  This will not leave you overwhelmed, but at the same time give you a sense of being in control.  As you move through the various aspects of your life, organizing and gaining control as you go, the more it will inspire you to carry on.

It make take a bit of time to completely get all of your ducks in a row, but oh so worth it in the end.   Nothing worse than having to spend precious minutes or hours looking for something that should have been easy to put your hand right on.

There is nothing like the feeling of knowing where everything is and being on top of your life.

Let’s dig in — shall we?  First thing — Make a list of all things which need to be tackled!
